Penstemons, aka, beardtongue are my favorite species. They have 4 stemens and one staminode. I see there have some changes in classification since I last checked out the site. There 250 species of North America and Easter Asia flowering plants. These pictures were taken at their native habitat in the latr 1980s and 1990s. Many of the southern species are not hardy. The hummingbirds love them especially the red species.
This rare yellow Penstemon was taken in a American Penstemon member’s garden.
Penstemon Barrettii is endenic the Eastern Columbia River Gorge. In the 1990 it was brcoming rare. A group of gardeners took cuttings and did this planting along the medium of Coumbia River portion the interstate I-5 in hopes of saving it.
Thes pictures were taken at an American Penstemon Society annual meeting in New Mexico. Idaho Transportation Department alo g the roadsides Idaho roads. It survive for a few years. Colors range from pure white to a pink.
